Discover Awumaki Sushi

If you’re craving fresh rolls in La Fortuna, Awumaki Sushi is the kind of place that quietly wins you over from the first bite. Tucked 10km Al oeste de la inglesia católica, La palma, San carols, La Fortuna, 21007, Costa Rica, this local sushi spot has become a favorite for both residents and travelers looking for something lighter than the typical Costa Rican casado. I stopped by after a long hike near Arenal Volcano, and honestly, it was exactly what I needed-clean flavors, balanced portions, and a menu that goes beyond the usual California roll.

The first thing that stood out was the freshness. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), proper seafood handling and temperature control are essential for maintaining quality and safety. You can taste when a restaurant gets that right. The salmon sashimi here was buttery and firm, not fishy, and served at the perfect chilled temperature. I watched the chef prepare it behind the counter, carefully slicing with precise movements, which told me they understand technique. That level of care reflects what the World Health Organization recommends for raw fish preparation-strict hygiene and cold chain management. While I can’t see every step behind the scenes, the consistency in texture and flavor suggests they follow best practices.

The menu is surprisingly varied. Alongside classic nigiri and maki rolls, they offer fusion creations with tropical touches-think mango slices layered over tuna or rolls finished with a passion fruit drizzle. It’s creative without being gimmicky. I tried one of their signature rolls with shrimp tempura, avocado, and cream cheese, lightly torched on top. The contrast between the crispy tempura and the smooth avocado worked beautifully. For anyone new to sushi, this kind of combination makes the experience approachable and satisfying.

Their rice deserves a special mention. Sushi rice isn’t just steamed white rice; it’s seasoned with vinegar, sugar, and salt in carefully measured proportions. The Japan Sushi Association often emphasizes that rice texture is the backbone of good sushi. Here, the grains were slightly sticky but not mushy, holding together without overpowering the fish. That balance takes practice, and you can tell they’ve refined their process over time.

I also appreciated how the staff guided us through the options. When I asked about raw versus cooked rolls, they explained the difference clearly and recommended items based on our preferences. That kind of service builds trust. Online reviews frequently mention their friendly atmosphere, and I experienced the same. Even during a busy dinner hour, the team stayed attentive without hovering.

From a health perspective, sushi can be a smart dining choice. Research published in nutrition journals often highlights omega-3 fatty acids in fish like salmon and tuna, which support heart health. Of course, moderation matters-especially with soy sauce and fried items-but having access to fresh seafood in a town better known for rainforest adventures feels like a bonus.

The location itself is convenient if you’re exploring the western side of La Fortuna. Being 10km west of the Catholic church in La Palma makes it an easy stop whether you’re staying in town or heading back from a day tour. Parking is straightforward, and the setting feels relaxed, casual, and welcoming. It’s not a luxury fine-dining venue, but that’s part of the charm. You come here for honest, well-prepared sushi and a laid-back vibe.

One thing worth noting is that availability of certain fish can depend on supply. That’s normal in Costa Rica, where fresh catch varies by season. On my second visit, one of the specialty rolls wasn’t available, but the staff offered an alternative that was just as good. Transparency like that adds credibility.

Overall, the combination of fresh ingredients, thoughtful preparation, and friendly service makes this spot stand out among restaurants in La Fortuna. Whether you’re a sushi enthusiast who knows the difference between sashimi and nigiri or someone just exploring Japanese cuisine for the first time, this place delivers a reliable and enjoyable dining experience.

  • We were pleasantly surprised to find Korean food in Costa Rica. We met the owner in the afternoon and returned later that day for the spicy pork bibimbap for two. It was delicious; perfectly seasoned! I’m including pics of the menu/pricing.

  • The girls & I stopped in here after a long day of adventures/hot springing it! The food was so delicious & portions a very decent size. I love the ambience along with the seating arrangements...you look as if you are sitting on the floor, but you really aren't! Service was really slow as they only had one waiter & one chef when we visited (so I can't really hold that against them). If in the area, definitely stop in if you want some great Asian cuisine!

  • Stelar atmosphere and excellent service. We ordered the vegan bbq, after 10 minutes the waiter informed us that they were out of the vegan meat. He was super apoligetic and polite. We ordered sushi instead and it was delicious.
